President Profile: Vince D’Mello

Vince D'Mello

Vince is a widely acknowledged professional and key opinion leader in the medical laboratory industry, provincially, nationally and internationally.  He has more than 25 years of leadership experience with a variety of laboratory operations and meeting accreditation standards from organizations such as the College of American Pathologists (CAP), American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) and Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) which is based on ISO 15189 requirements.  Prior to establishing D’Mello LabMed Consultants (DLMC) he was the Administrative Director of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, at Mount Sinai Hospital, a major academic centre in Toronto. In 2006, under his leadership, the department was designated a “Centre of Excellence” one of five such centres within the hospital and the first for a laboratory department in Canada.

His contributions to the profession and health care are well established and recognized. He has continuously played an integral role in promoting the values of providing patient centered and quality driven laboratory services that not only meet but exceed clinical expectations.  He has a long standing interest in leading the development of best practices, utilizing quality management systems and adopting meaningful operational benchmarks to achieve and sustain service excellence.

His key leadership attributes and competencies are macro systems thinking, positive influence on others, business acumen, successfully implementing change initiatives, risk taking and innovation, developing others through effective coaching and mentoring strategies.
He has held progressive leadership positions in a variety of settings which include academic and community hospitals, regulatory environments and private industry.  Throughout his career he has successfully integrated operations, implemented leading edge technology and achieved outcomes that have made significant contributions to improving patient care. His leadership and mentorship have consistently improved operational efficiencies, staff productivity, service effectiveness and most importantly the delivery of safe and quality laboratory services.

He has a distinguished reputation within the laboratory industry for making a difference. He knows the key trends and stakeholders in the medical laboratory industry and recognizes that the time is right for organizations to position themselves for competitive advantages in the market place. Vince is a frequently invited guest speaker at professional meetings, seminars, conferences and industry workshops.

Some of the prestigious organizations he has delivered presentations at include Roche Diagnostics, CLMA, Executive Edge, Dark Report, Lab Quality Confab, AACC, Insight, CMLTO and CSMLS. Topics presented include leadership, quality systems, operational management, lean and six sigma case studies, regulatory affairs, point of care testing, operational benchmarks and laboratory automation.

Throughout his career, Vince has served on a variety of professional committees and industry sponsored advisory panels. He is the Past President of the Trillium Chapter of the CLMA, a professional international organization of volunteers that represents leaders in clinical systems, whose primary goal is to achieve excellence in the provision of diagnostic services.  During his two-year term as President, the Trillium Chapter was internationally acclaimed by winning the “Chapter Achievement Award” in the first year, followed by the prestigious “Chapter of the Year Award” the next year.  In 2009 he was the recipient of the A.R. Shearer “Pride of the Profession Award” from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).  These honours recognize leadership and commitment to excellence using well-defined strategic approaches to operations and effective teamwork.

Vince obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and his initial medical laboratory training and certification in England.  He holds certification from the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science.  In addition, he has completed Executive Management training certification from the University of Notre Dame (Indiana) and the Schulich School of Business, York University (Toronto).
